Rethink Role of ‘humans’

Role of human in the workplace is changing in ways that the world has never seen before. Artificial intelligence and cognitive technologies are bringing in major transitions in job roles and shifting demand for skills. As organizations adopt these technologies, JDs will have to be reimagined with the fusion of human skills with technology. As organization increase their adoption of AI and robotic process automation (to improve efficiency and productivity), JDs will also require more human skills in problem-solving, communication, interpretation, and design.

As per the 2019 Global Human Capital Trends, new jobs will be created called “superjobs” that will be a combination of traditional jobs and skills required by people when they work with technology. These “superjobs” would demand new skills and will prompt the HR to redesign of jobs in a growing number of domains. Studies by World Economic Forum and McKinsey indicate that the ongoing workplace dynamics is inexorably replacing job activities with machines and software. On an average about 25% of the activities being done by humans in 60% of jobs will be replaced by technology. In some jobs this could be as high as 50% of the activities; and in 5% of the jobs, humans would be replaced entirely by technology.

Adoption of digital technologies like mobile internet, big data analytics, cloud computing and IoT, by businesses has profoundly impacted models for work and work structure. The alternative workforce – remote work, independent work, gig economy with short term engagements, and temporary contracts – is now mainstream. HR team now need to strategize for all types of work arrangements and align them with organization’s plans for growth. Evolving work formats and work structures are creating an enormous demand for new skills and capabilities. Workers in future technology-rich work environments will be expected to set their deliveries, work independently, solve problems and interact in virtual teams for work fulfilment

Employees will constantly need to acquire new skills that enable new ways of working, including collaboration with intelligent systems and machines. They will need to be upskilled to use automation to augment their roles and explore more creative styles of working. Learning has evolved – it is self-paced and integrated with work. Now it is shifting towards lifelong models.

Learning cannot happen without the yearning or the curiosity to know; and a curious person is constantly willing to learn and improve. Hence, curiosity quotient (CQ) of employees, which gives them the ability and agility to learn, has become one of the most important soft skills required to stay relevant in organizational environments.
